Sea Monsters
When strange bones are discovered in a muddy Kansas river bank, paleontologists set out to investigate a mystery "buried in time." Through ultra-realistic 3-D computer animation we travel back to the Late Cretaceous, when the sea was dominated by giant marine reptiles, some as large as present-day whales. The film follows a female Dolichorhynchops (a seal-like reptile) and her offspring through adventures that illustrate life in the sea during the Age of Dinosaurs. Live-action recreations of actual paleontological digs are intercut throughout, revealing the scientific basis for each animated episode. In the end, the bones in Kansas turn out to be those of the featured Dolichorhynchops.Click here for more information on Sea Monsters and to see a preview of the movie. Large Format Film The iWERKS system uses 8/70 film, or 70mm film with 8 perforations per film frame. The film is twice as wide as the 35mm film used in many cameras, but the frame area is nearly 200 percent larger, which allows for an image that is crisp and richly detailed. iWERKS Projection System The system, designed and built by iWERKS Entertainment of Burbank, California, has received an Academy Award for Technological Breakthrough for its innovative projector head design. A 7,000-watt Xenon short-arc lamp is used to project a bright and detailed image. The projector moves 180 feet of film per minute, or about 1.36 miles of film per 40-minute show. The film passes through the projection system at 24 frames per second and is wound up on 4 1/2-foot diameter platters. iWERKS Sound System The iWERKS sound system uses a 6.1 Digital DTS cinema processor.
