DENVER—April 10, 2006—Continuing to provide a unique and educational experience to its visitors, The Wildlife Experience has added a collection of life-like chimpanzee sculptures to the main atrium of the ever-changing and interactive museum.

On Monday, April 10, five new pieces were added to an impressive collection of bronze sculpture at The Wildlife Experience. “The Gathering,” created by artist Bart Walter, depicts the life-sized chimps all relating to each other in different poses and facial expressions. Each has a title like each would have a role in a grouping of chimps such as this. Names of the pieces consist of The Matriarch, The Observer, The Ally, The Explorer, The Youth, The Servant and The Alpha. The last two of the seven sculptures will be added in May.

Bart Walter began sculpting in clay in the 1980’s and continues to sculpt in clay to this day. His work ultimately is the result of a layered process, but his finished pieces reveal beautiful forms of animals extracted directly from their natural environments. Walter remarks about his method that, “In my mind’s eye, I strip away all that is unnecessary, even as I build the sculpture with layer upon layer of clay. My goal is a distillation of the subject until only true essentials are left.

Dr. Jane Goodall took these pieces on tour with her when she celebrated her 40th anniversary of research in Gombe. Goodall states that “I have long believed that there are different ways we experience the natural world…through science and observation, through discussion and reading. And, we also touch nature through our art.”

“The Gathering” is the second edition of three and is on loan from a private collection. For more information on Bart Walter, visit www.bartwalter.com.
