Press ReleaseJewels of the Insect World Flutter, Creep, and Crawl into The Wildlife ExperienceDENVER – April 1, 2004 – Colorado artist J.B. McKoy fuses science and art in framed displays of actual butterflies and other insects from around the world. About 30 of McKoy's pieces will be showcased in Jewels of Earth and Sky , an exhibition opening at The Wildlife Experience museum April 10. To McKoy, the insects in his displays are far more than scientific specimens. They are works of art. He presents them, he said, “in ways that accentuate their beauty and movement.” The displays create for the viewer the rarely seen world beneath rainforest canopies. Butterflies in particular inspire McKoy's creativity. “Butterflies have an ability to inspire people deeply beyond words,” he said. “They are symbols of hope and encouragement, capable of bringing joy through their sheer beauty.” Many of the butterflies showcased in the Jewels of Earth and Sky exhibit come from butterfly farms. Conservationists strongly support the cottage industry of butterfly art and trade as a means of increasing public understanding of endangered rainforest habitats. A middle-school science class first sparked McKoy's interest in insects – and that interest never died. After earning his bachelor's degree in computer science at Dartmouth College and spending several years in the computer technology field, he changed his career course to create art with butterflies and other insects. His work decorates corporate offices and is in private collections worldwide. Jewels of Earth and Sky will be on display at The Wildlife Experience through June 20. For more information on J.B.
