Peregrine Falcons Fly Through the Wildlife Experience
Beginning Saturday, February 22, 2003

DENVER- February 7, 2003 - In times of diminishing habitats, tarnished environments and declining diversity it is a rare and incredible event when a species headed for extinction is brought back from the abyss. The Peregrine Falcon: The Return of an Endangered Species, The Wildlife Experience's latest natural history exhibit, tells just this story. The Peregrine Falcon: The Return of an Endangered Species opens at the Wildlife Experience Museum on Saturday, February 22.

A traveling exhibit organized by the Bell Museum of Natural History in collaboration with the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota, this dynamic exhibit uses a variety of materials and formats to describe the peregrine's journey back from near extinction. By looking closely at the biology, behavior, and near demise of these remarkable birds, guests will become immersed in the long history that peregrines have shared with humans.

As guests wind their way through this multi-faceted exhibit they will encounter a large panoramic photomural of the peregrine's modern-day habitat: a large city skyline. Visitors will also be introduced to these amazing birds through illustrations, dioramas, and video. Models of crushed and cracked eggs resting on a rock ledge help visitors understand the terrible toll DDT and other pesticides had on peregrine populations worldwide and across the eastern United States in particular. A real hack box and other equipment along with a collection of photographs describe how private falconers, university researchers, and wildlife biologists brought the peregrine back through captive breeding and reintroduction.

The Peregrine Falcon: The Return of an Endangered Species will be at the Wildlife Experience Museum through May 18, 2003. There is no extra cost to see this exhibit. Special programs, including animal demonstrations and children's art projects, will be scheduled in conjunction with this exhibit.
