DENVER - December 17, 2002 -"Naturally Drawn," a selection of 60 artist sketches, has just opened at the Featured Gallery of The Wildlife Experience museum.
The drawings were culled from a group of more than 350 in the permanent collection of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wisconsin, which organized the exhibition for tour.
The sketches range from quick sketches and studies to highly finished presentations of nature, including birds, plant life, and landscapes. The artists pay attention to habitat and environment while also capturing the "personality" of their subjects. As a group, the works exhibit the raw energy and creativity, which exists at the beginning stages of an artwork.
Such a collection of field studies provides visitors with a way of opening the door to better understanding the creative process. With a drawing there is immediacy between the viewer and the object that is missing from most mediums. Drawings are very personal, a reaction to what the artist is seeing, feeling, and hearing out in the field.
A number of works in Naturally Drawn are actually pages taken from sketchbooks. Here, the way the artist places field notes on the page adds to the compositional pleasure of the piece while also providing valuable reference information regarding time of day, weather conditions, light levels, and surrounding vegetation.
Naturally Drawn will be on exhibit at The Wildlife Experience until late Feb. 23, 2003. A natural history and wildlife art museum, The Wildlife Experience is located at 10035 South Peoria St., Parker, Colo., approximately five miles south of the Denver Tech Center and one mile east of I-25 at the intersection of Lincoln Ave. and S. Peoria.
One of the primary goals of The Wildlife Experience is to instill a love and respect of all things wild through education and example, and inspire those who visit the museum and its unique galleries to become involved in conservation efforts. The museum houses an extensive permanent collection of wildlife art, including original oils, watercolors, sculpture and photography. Galleries such as Vanishing Africa and the Conservation Gallery display pieces of the collection as well as various natural history components including animal and cultural artifacts, interactive activity centers, and reading corners. For admission prices, museum and giant-screen theater hours, and information on Naturally Drawn, please call (720) 488-3300 or visit www.thewildlifeexperience.org. Photographs are available.
